16:10 display

Postby insx » Mon Sep 23, 2013 3:03 pm

I just picked up a 16:10, 1680x1050 display. I'm guessing that the game might be designed for 16:9 1080p displays. Will it make much difference? The test render looks pretty good on it.

Depends on the monitor. If it scales without cropping then things will look slightly fatter in portrait mode (and slimmer in landscape), but if it crops (ie. adds black borders to correct the ratio) then it should look correct (ie. ball isn't elliptic).

My Samsung monitor (16:10, 1920x1200, 24") can display 16:9 (and other common ratios like 4:3 and 5:4) by cropping. It also scales to nearest neighbour (instead of having bilinear filtering), so it's even suitable for old games with small resolutions (eg. from 320x240 to 1280x1024).

16:9 is closer to real table proportions, but 16:10 will still look great. There will be a number of options, including stretching slightly to fill the width, or having small black bars at the sides. Cropping top or bottom might be an option too, though you may lose too much of the table.

The test render looks really good stretched, I would just hate to end up playing with a silver rugby ball!

I run a 16:9 TV for the playfield and a 16:10 monitor for the backglass. The 16:10 is closer to real proportions for a backglass.

Visual Pinball looks fine because it has an option to scale the ball properly to fit the display. Having the table itself stretched a bit really doesn't cause a problem.
