Image quality on high PPI tablets

Postby mxfh » Wed Sep 09, 2015 8:01 pm

I'm playing Version 1.0.0k.5 on a Galaxy Tab S 10.5(T800) at 2560x1600, overall it just doesn't look as crisp at it could.

I just can't come around noticing blocky chroma compression artifacts, especially around the edges of the lanes crossing over fully colored red/orange lights and the general blob of red that is the upper right corner. Please consider compressing them at full 4:4:4 resolution. Especially the disparity with the full resolution ball and moving parts this sometime makes me feel like I'm playing on a low resolution jpeg or mpeg-movie with some moving sprites slapped on it. That might be what it technically is, but it shouldn't feel that way.

Can someone please specify the compression used and maximum native resolution supported by the pre-rendered assets?
If the assets would be too big for the play store please consider providing higher quality packages for download.

Edit: Looking into the apk the highest Resolution is 1536x2048m
being not that far away from 1600x2560 would it be possible to run the game at 1:1 pixel scale centered on the screen?

Thanks for the feedback. Providing access to a higher resolution version of the table is something that could be added in a future update.

Great to hear that.

It's not just the nominal resolution, the current output looks like the typical default of many compression codecs 4:2:0, which might work out for natural scenes, but sadly not on the sharp diagonal edges of this table design. For future release please consider a chroma subsampling compression setting like 4:4:4 or something that doesn't produce those noticeable step artifacts.

Another minor image quality issue: The color depth could be higher, if possible. Since some diffusion patterns (ordered dithering) are clearly noticeable in areas of almost uniform color, most prominently in the image of the time machine in the center.

Please see the annotated version of the same screenshot for examples of both issues:

Is there a more recent version than 1.0.0k.5?

1.0.3k.12 still looks as jaggy and exhibits color artifacts as described above when upscaled.

Since the PC version is able to download the pre-rendered packages up to 2560px ( :D ~2GB ), is it possible too include such a module in the android version?

Especially having a 1:1 1600x2560 pack would be great.
