Timeshock Original & Kickstarter version on W8 Pro 64 bit

Postby pcraenme » Fri Sep 20, 2013 6:57 pm

I have two PC's running W8 Pro 64 bit.
PC1 used as HTPC:
- Intel Core 2 Duo E6400
- 4GB RAM
- AMD Radeon HD7790
PC2 used as gaming PC:
- Intel Core i5 3579K
- 16GB RAM
- nVidia Geforce GTX 660 ti
Timeshock gameplay is very choppy on both PC's. When I check FPS via Fraps, FPS fluctuate between 29-33. Both CPU and GPU load show as very low at that time. What could be causing these low FPS? Both PC's are much more powerful than the PC's I played TS on years ago. I also tried all compatibility modes, without success.

BTW, I own the other Pro Pinball tables as well, an all have this same problem on W8.

Ball movement is similarly jerky for me under Windows 8 Pro x64, having tested on the following two systems:

* Pentium G860
* 4 GB RAM
* GeForce GTX 460

and

* Core i7 2600K (at stock speed)
* 16 GB RAM
* GeForce GTX 670

The jerky ball movement applies to Fantastic Journey and Big Race USA too. It probably has something to do with being a purely 2D program, although even running under software emulation the PCs we have these days are orders of magnitude more powerful than the 200 MHz Pentiums that were pretty decent in 1997.

By comparison, the original DOS Timeshock and The Web run as smooth as silk on my 14-year old machine (kept purely to run old games), a P3-500 with a GeForce 2 GTS graphics card (and DOS 7.1 from Windows 98SE). At least it won't be an issue for Timeshock for too much longer! :)

@nudiustertian
Thanks for making all these suggestions :) But I tried all these already. The only thing that 'helps' a bit is disabling screen flipping, but then regularly it gets choppy as well. I have monitored CPU load using that setting and it is at 25%, which means it is using a complete CPU core when the game gets choppy. And a 1997 game is not able to use multiple cores I think. ;)

The only thing that really helps is installing W7 64 bit. With exactly the same graphics drivers, Timeshock runs silky smooth (60 FPS constant) on both PC's.

Just curious if anyone is able to get it running smoothly (60 FPS constant) on W8 64 bit? Since I have both AMD Radeon and nVidia Geforce cards, it does not seem to be related to the graphics cards/driver and to be a W8 issue. In W8.1 preview it is the same BTW.

That's really weird, because I have a Windows 8 laptop with 6 GB of ram and an AMD A4 quad-core processor, and Timeshock! works just fine.

Hi, i fixed the stuttering on Win8 for myself.

First uninstalled, reran setup in compatibility-mode for Win XP SP3, reduced color mode 16 bit and disabled dpi scaling.

Aplied same compatibility settings to the game executable, and switched screen buffering off in menu. This worked for me. Pls test and maybe confirm.

Btw. anyone managed to show fps ingame? Either fraps nor Rivatuner Statistics Server are working for me.

Phaq......* !!!?+##!0? *

Same here... On Win7-32bit it worked perfectly with the same hardware... Win8.1-64bit stutters a lot.

Hope Timeshock Ultra will be released soon. :mrgreen:
